January 2021: Mawson

It might be cold outside, but that didn't stop Amundsen!

Norwegian Roald Amundsen was a key figure during The Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. You may know him as being the first person to the South Pole, arriving on 14th December 1911, just under 5 weeks before the Brit, Robert Falcon Scott (Scott famously died on his return journey from the pole).

However, Amundsen had other great conquests also. He had previously led the first successful mission to cross Canada's Northwest Passage; connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Amunsen also had various attempts at the North Pole, and, along with 15 others, was the first person to fly over the pole in an airship on 12th May 1926.

Amunsen was an unusual character. He clashed with the Brits, having made out that his ultimately successful expedition to the South Pole was actually to head North instead; with his sponsors and Scott only learning of his intention to race South instead when he left Norway.

Amunsen perished on one of his daring adventures. The trailer is below, and you can watch the full film on BBC iPlayer, here.
