INTRODUCTION TO MAP READING
(1 DAY COURSE)

Guests book onto Adventure Solos events by themselves, and arrive to enjoy a fun, friendly and social event. The event is a great way to try new things and make new friends. This is also facilitated by an Adventure Solos host who will be present throughout and helps to ensure everyone is having a good time. Please be aware that we keep the numbers for our Map Reading Course quite low, so groups will be smaller than most of our other events.

You do not need prior map reading or navigational experience for this event. Standard outdoor/walking equipment is recommended - for example waterproof jacket, small rucksack, quick-drying clothes (ie not jeans). Further details on what to wear are provided as part of your Pre-Adventure Guide.

Your schedule is likely to look something like this (may vary depending on instructor, weather, location etc): Morning Arrive and meet the group. Depending on the weather, we may head to a local pub for a chat and an introduction to a map before venturing outside to share some skills with you. Lunch There may be a pub lunch option, or you will need to bring a packed lunch (please check with your instructor closer to the time for final confirmation). Afternoon With our support, you will plot and at times lead a basic low-level walk, putting to use the skills, tools and techniques we've shared with you during the day.

We meet at Oxenholme Lake District Station Car Park. Driving – If you are driving, the postcode is LA9 7HG. Train - Oxenholme Lake District Station is 2.5 hours from London Euston (direct), 2 hours from Birmingham (direct), 2 hours from Glasgow or Edinburgh (direct) and 1 hour from Manchester (direct).

You will need to bring some water, snacks and a usually a packed lunch with you (unless we decide to opt for a pub lunch instead - please check with your instructor closer to the time).

You will need: - sensible outdoor clothing . We provide you with more information on this before the event but we recommend some sturdy footwear such as hiking boots,(https://www.adventurebreaks.club/post/which-hiking-boots) a waterproof jacket and a day pack (20-30 litres works best). We also love these hydration bladders.(https://www.adventuresolos.com/product-page/osprey-hydration-pack-bladder-1-5-litres) - a pen/pencil and paper for note taking / writing during the day (and a way to keep them dry in your bag, particularly if it's due to be wet). - a map and compass for the event, a permanent pen (for writing on your map). You do not need prior camping experience; that's what this event is all about.

It is recommended that if you are comfortable walking for several miles outdoors, and being on your feet for most of the day (although of course we will aim to take breaks during the day). If you have been on one of our Day Walks, you most likely have all the fitness you will need.
