I consider South to be the most incredible true story of survival ever told. In 1915, Ernest Shackleton and his crew are stranded in Antartica when their ship, The Endurance, sinks after becomming trapped in the ice.

These hardy adventurers may have well have been on a different planet. There was no way to communicate with the rest of the world, and in order to survive, the expedition must make their own way to rescue.

The party used a small open wooden boat, The James Caird, to travel to South Georgia; over 800 miles away across the unforgiving ocean and freezing conditions. At times on rations of one hot drink per day with little food. There is a huge risk that the team, even if they survive the journey, simply miss the island and sail past into oblivion.

Amazingly, 6 members of the party successfully make it to South Georgia, however they are near death (3 members of the party are not fit to walk), battling frostbite, and are on an unmapped side of the island with a mountain range before any possibility of rescue at the whaling stations.

South is Shacklton's own account of this expedition and journey, in which every member of the 28 person crew, survives.
