Finalist in the William Hill Sports Book of the Year, this book is a great tale of adventure on the seas. You don't have to know anything about sailing to enjoy this book; it tells the story for the Golden Globe Race.
In 1966-7, a 65 year old Brit, Francis Chichester, sailed alone around the world. He stopped only once, in Australia. He completed the circumnavigation in 226 days (274 days including the stopover in Sydney) to set a record for the fastest voyage around the world in a small boat.The race was on to be the first person to sail non-stop around the world alone. Sponsored by The Sunday Times newspaper, the Golden Globe Race was announced in March 1968, with a trophy for the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world via the five great capes and another £5,000 for the fastest time. Nine characters with varying sailing skills headed off at various times in a strange collection of yachts. They weren't sportsmen or yachtsmen - one didn't even know how to sail.
There was only one finisher – Robin Knox-Johnston, who at the start, was considered the most unlikely boat and given no chance. The rest either sank, retired or committed suicide.
This book is a fascinating read. It inspired me to go off and dig out other stories from some of the nine characters in the book; it is that good.
